Often, with IVF, determining the sex of a child is not a whim of the parents, but the ability to bear and give birth to a healthy baby with hereditary diseases related to sex.

In order to understand how this is possible, let's look at how the gender of the future person is shaped. The sex of a child depends on what genetic material enters the egg cell from the sperm.

The female egg contains two X chromosomes, and the male spermatozoa contains the X and Y chromosomes. If the two X chromosomes merge, a girl will be born; if the female X chromosome connects to the male Y chromosome, a boy will be born.

After fertilization by the egg sperm cell, the sets of two chromosomes are merged. Genetic information is laid in the early stages of fetal development, which causes the birth of a child of one or another sex. Initially, all embryos carry feminine sex characteristics. Next comes the differentiation of sex by the X or Y chromosome. The fetus acquires the characteristic bookmarks of organs for a boy or for a girl.

What are the chances of planning a floor with IVF?

It is possible to choose the sex of the child during IVF, since fertilization occurs outside the uterus. If, at physiological conception, an embryo forms in the fallopian tubes, and then descends into the uterus and attaches to its wall, then in vitro fertilization, embryos undergo initial development in a "test tube" with appropriate modes that mimic the female body.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) - This is the selection of embryos without hereditary pathology outside the uterus. In this case, a biopsy of one blastomere is performed at the crushing stage and a thorough study of the genetic material under a microscope. If hereditary diseases are transmitted through the maternal line, then a biopsy of the polar cells of the egg before fertilization is possible.

Since during the PGD for the examination of genetic material is taken, it becomes possible to determine the sex of the unborn child. This opportunity is secondary. The main task is to plant embryos that do not have a hereditary pathology.

PGD ​​justifies itself in the case when the family has a disease, sex-linked. In such a situation, a careful selection of healthy embryos will be made, and they will be transplanted into the uterine cavity.

How the floor planning technology is implemented

When IVF fertilization of the egg is carried out in a special container by planting sperm.

In the usual IVF procedure, fertilization of the egg cell is carried out by a random sperm cell, which is located in the sperm. The ejaculate is added to the egg cell, after which it is randomly merged with the sperm cell.

One of the types of IVF is ICSI - Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. In this procedure, the sperm is placed in the egg cell. The procedure is microsurgical and is done under a microscope. In addition, IVF-ICSI is indicated for a thick egg capsule or in the absence of pregnancy in previous IVF cycles.

After in vitro fertilization occurred after 3-5 days, one of the embryos is removed and subjected to research. The presence of a hereditary pathology is checked, and the sex of the embryo is also determined. If the study excludes pathology, it is possible to replant the embryo into the cavity of the prepared uterus. As a rule, several embryos are transplanted, which increases the chances of their engraftment and further development.

With the usual IVF procedure, up to three embryos can be replanted, after PGD - two. This is due to the fact that before planting a thorough genetic analysis of them is carried out.

With pre-implantation genetic diagnosis before IVF, the sex of the child is always determined. Therefore, if there is no hereditary pathology, it is possible to choose who you would like to give birth to: a boy or a girl.

After PGD, embryos that do not undergo replanting into the uterine cavity are frozen, which gives a chance to repeat their replanting in case of an unsuccessful IVF attempt or, if desired, to give birth again.

Frozen embryos are less likely to survive, however, this procedure requires less material costs and less invasive interventions.

The disadvantage of PGD in IVF is the significant material costs of conducting this diagnostic.

Both the X chromosomes and the Y chromosomes can be present in the spermatozoa, and only the X chromosomes are present in the egg cells. It is necessary to take into account the fact that in a number of countries, including Russia, the law prohibits the planning of the sex of a child during IVF. Such planning is possible only if the spouses have a genetic disease that is transmitted by sex - only the girl or only the boy.

However, in some states, for example, in the USA, there is no prohibition on such planning during IVF.

Calculate the moment of ovulation

Studies have shown that sperm with the Y chromosome move faster than with the X chromosome, but they are less resistant and die earlier. Sperm that has entered the female body remains active for up to 7 days.

If sexual intercourse occurred during ovulation, then faster sperm with a Y-chromosome have greater chances to fertilize the egg, and, consequently, increase the chances of having a boy.

If this happened a few days before ovulation, then the activity will remain mostly more resistant sperm with the X chromosome - which means that the likelihood of the birth of a girl increases.

As you can see, the key to this method is the correct determination of the moment of ovulation. Her offensive is determined by tests, ultrasound, temperature measurement, personal sensations, the use of special calendars. Depending on what gender of the future baby we want, conception attempts are made on the day of ovulation (or as close as possible to this day), or 3-4 days before it.

Abstaining from intimate life

Another method that allows you to influence the sex of the child, is the regulation of sexual activity. It is believed that with intensive sex life (intercourse daily or every other day) increases the likelihood of the birth of a boy, and with prolonged abstinence - the girl.

This view is not supported by all researchers, but you can try to plan the floor of the baby in this way. If the appearance of a girl is preferable, then it is necessary to refrain from intercourse for at least one month, and even caressing is inadmissible.

Observe a certain diet

It is believed that the use of various pickles, as well as foods rich in potassium, contributes to the birth of a boy. But eating foods rich in calcium and magnesium, increases the likelihood of the birth of a girl. If parents want to increase the chance of a baby of a certain sex, it is recommended to go on a special diet about 2.5 months before conception.
